Avian influenza confirmed in Manitoba after wild bird samples tested

Manitoba has confirmed that two wild bird samples reported near Waskada and Dauphin have tested positive for the highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI), subtype H5N1.

The province says that so far no cases of avian influenza have been detected in poultry flocks in Manitoba.

Even with positive cases the risk of to human health is low. There are currently no known strains of the virus from birds to humans in North America.

Officials say that the avian influenza strain does not pose a food safety risk and that eggs and poultry in Manitoba when properly handled and cooked.
