Attempted murder and arson charges laid in Portage Avenue hotel fire

An 18-year-old male and two teen females have been arrested in connection to a fire at the Super 8 hotel on Portage Avenue early Sunday morning.

An adult female was found in one of the suites during the fire in critical condition. She was taken to hospital and was soon upgraded to stable.

Officers who responded to the blaze determined that the three suspects were linked to the fire. A female 14-year-old was taken into custody nearby.

Two other suspects, an 18-year-old male and a 16-year-old female were located near Livinia Avenue and Isbister Street. When they were taken into custody a sawed-off shotgun was located in their possession.

Investigators determined that the trio had been in the company of the female victim prior to the fire.

Cassius Vaughn Malcolm (18) has been charged for his alleged involvement with Attempt to Commit Murder, Arson with Disregard for Human Life and Unauthorized Possession of a Firearm.

The 16-year-old female has been charged for her alleged involvement with Attempt to Commit Murder, Arson with Disregard for Human Life, Possession of a Firearm Knowing its Possession was Unauthorized, Identity Fraud, four counts of Failing to Comply with Court Orders, Warrant for Failing to Attend Court, Warrant for Failing to Appear in Ident and Warrant for Failing to Comply Sentence Order.

The 14-year-old female was charged for her alleged involvement with Attempt to Commit Murder and Arson with Disregard for Human Life.

All three suspects were detained in custody.
