On July 10, 2024, at approximately 5:00 a.m., a 52-year-old woman was assaulted during an attempted carjacking on the 200 block of Cathedral Avenue. The Winnipeg Police Service’s North District General Patrol officers responded promptly to the incident.
The victim reported that she had been assaulted by one of three suspects while they were attempting to steal her parked vehicle. One of the suspects, brandishing what appeared to be a firearm, demanded the keys to her vehicle. The suspect then assaulted the victim in the upper body with the firearm, threatening to kill her. The victim sustained minor injuries. The suspects, failing to steal the vehicle, fled the scene before police arrived.
Two youths and one adult were arrested in the vicinity without incident. Various controlled substances and a small quantity of funds were seized from one of the suspects. The firearm, believed to be a replica (BB rifle), was discarded as the suspects fled.
The Major Crimes Unit took over the investigation and discovered that shortly before this incident, the same three suspects had damaged a 2016 Kia Forte on the 200 block of Machray Avenue and a 2020 Kia Soul near Church Avenue and Powers Street. The damages to the vehicles are estimated to be approximately $1000.
The 18-year-old male suspect faces charges of Armed Robbery, two counts of Mischief Under $5,000, three counts of Possession of Scheduled Substances (Cocaine, Fentanyl, Ecstacy), and Possession of more than 30 grams of Marijuana in a public place.
The 16-year-old male suspect has been charged with Armed Robbery, Uttering Threats to Cause Death or Bodily Harm, and two counts of Mischief Under $5,000.
The 17-year-old female suspect faces the charge of Armed Robbery using a Restricted Firearm or Prohibited Firearm.
All three suspects were released with Undertakings as mandated by the Criminal Code. The investigation is ongoing.
