Suspect pepper sprays police officers

30-year-old Justin Robert Cooney is facing a number of charges after he pepper-sprayed two Winnipeg Police Service officers on Tuesday night.

Police say that they had gone to a residence on Simcoe Street after a disturbance was reported.

As police arrived and knocked on the door,  a male opened it slightly and discharged pepper spray at the officers. Both of the officers were contaminated by the spray but were able to react quickly and pull back so the pepper spray only had a minimal effect on them.

The suspect was taken into custody about an hour later after more units were called in, including the Tactical Support Team.

Cooney was detained in custody.
