A dangerous situation erupted Tuesday afternoon as police attempted to arrest a 32 year old man behaving erratically.
It all began around 3:15 pm on December 20, 2016. Winnipeg Police responded to the 500 block of Stella Avenue after receiving reports that a man was behaving erratically.
Once on scene police identified the man as being wanted and attempted to place him under arrest. During the arrest the man became violent and struggled with officers managing to disarm one of the officers of his Conducted Electrical Weapon (Taser). The man activated the weapon and made contact with the officer.
A physical altercation erupted between the suspect and two officers when the Taser was activated again this time in the direction of several other officers now present. The suspect was restrained and the weapon was safely recovered.
Two officers sustained minor injuries due to the confrontation and contact with the weapon.
Police have charged Serge Rene CHARTRAND, 32 from Winnipeg with the following due to his alleged involvement:
Assault a peace Officer with a Weapon x 5
Pointing a Firearm x 5
Disarming a Peace Officer x 2
Resist Peace Officer
Possession of a Prohibited or Restricted Firearm with Ammunition
Possession of Firearm, Restricted/Prohibited Weapon or Ammunition Contrary to Probation Order
Possession of a Weapon
Fail to Comply Condition Recognizance by Judge/Justice
He was remanded into custody.
