Drug induced rage leads to assault, property damage, carjacking and a police chase

Police say that a 40-year-old male who appeared strung out on methamphetamine is responsible for attacking several people, damaging property and carjacking a tow-truck before leading police on a short chase.

It all began around 9:20 pm on Sunday, January 28, 2018. The man walked into a convenience store in the 900 block of Archibald Street and assaulted two employees behind the counter. The employees said the man appeared disoriented at the time.

The suspect then tried to pull one of the staff members into a washroom but was not able to. He then locked himself inside the washroom and armed himself with a metal rod.

Police say that it was at this point that they were called.

One of the employees suffered minor injuries

Before police arrived the suspect left the store and broke the window of a car parked in a nearby parking lot. He then walked onto Archibald Street near Elizabeth Avenue and threw the metal rod at a passing vehicle.

As the suspect was standing in the middle of the road a tow-truck slowed to pass the man when the suspect jumped into the passenger side of the truck and told the driver to keep driving or he would shoot him.

Police located the truck on Fermor Avenue near Archibald and tried to stop the vehicle.

The tow-truck driver slammed on the brakes and jumped out as the truck was in gear and moving. The suspect slid over and fled in the truck. The tow-truck driver suffered minor injuries and was taken to the hospital.

The suspect continued driving the truck eastbound on Fermor Avenue. Just east of Lgimodière Boulevard on Highway 1 officers pursuing the truck were able to stop it and take the suspect into custody.
