Arsonist turns himself into police after fire in a historic home

RCMP in Russell have a 22-year-old male in custody after the oldest home in the community was set on fire.

Police say that on Tuesday night, around 11:00 pm, they responded to a house fire on Pelly Avenue in Russell. The home was built in 1888 and was fully engulfed in flames when emergency crews arrived on the scene.

Around 12:55 pm a 911 operator received a call from a male claiming to have set the fire. The caller gave dispatchers his location.

Officers located the male and placed him under arrest. Police say that he was in possession of a container believed to contain gasoline.

Liam Flett from Russell was charged with Arson, Mischief and Break and Entering to Commit an Offence. He was detained in custody.

RCMP continue to investigate.
