Arson charges laid in 2020 Provencher Boulevard fire

Winnipeg Police Service Major Crimes Unit have arrested and charged a 41-year-old male in connection to a major fire on Provencher Boulevard.

On February 20, 2020, Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responded to the fire in an auto business. Although crews initially launched an offensive attack conditions inside the structure became too dangerous and a transition was made to a defensive attack.

Five area residents and one bystander were taken to hospital due to smoke inhalation.

The structure and several vehicles were destroyed. Police estimate that the total damages exceeded one million dollars.

Investigators say they believe the fire was intentionally set for fraudulent monetary gain.

On April 22, 2021, the accused was arrested and is facing charges for his alleged involvement of Arson for Fraudulent Purposes and Arson Causing Damage to Property.

The accused was released on an Undertaking.
