Woman arrested for starting a fire in Maryland Avenue duplex

A 35-year-old woman is facing charges after she allegedly started a fire in a Maryland Avenue duplex on Halloween evening.

Police say the woman deliberately started the fire by placing flammables on top of the stove then left the residence.

A smoke alarm alerted the remaining people in the building who were able to get out safely.

Police arrested and charged Elena Mary Cowley, 35 with four counts of Arson Disregard for Human Life and Arson Damage to Property.

According to investigators Cowley admitted to using crack cocaine before starting the fire.

She was detained in custody.
