Around 7:25 pm on Wednesday, January 15, 2020, Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Services members were called to a fire in a two-and-a-half storey home on McDermot Avenue.
Smoke could be seen coming from the structure as crews arrived on scene and launched an offensive attack.
Winnipeg Police also were called to the fire after there were reports of at least one person armed with weapons.
According to police, a male was visiting the home after allegedly consuming Meth. He was exhibiting paranoid behaviour according to other tenants in the home.
The fire started after the male placed his shoes inside an open oven. The other people were alerted to the fire after they heard a loud bang.
The tenants tried to put the fire out using fire extinguishers but were unable to.
As the people in the residence were getting out of the building the male who had started the fire was holding a knife. A brief confrontation occurred and the suspect stabbed a male tenant. He then hit an adult female with an unknown object.
Police say the injured male suffered minor injuries and was taken to hospital in stable condition, treated and released.
WFPS say that the house suffered extensive fire smoke and water damage.
48-year-old Alex John Abraham was arrested and charged for his alleged involvement with six counts of Arson with Disregard for Human Life, Arson causing Property Damage and Assault with a Weapon x2.
Abraham also suffered injuries during the incident. He was taken to hospital, treated the medically cleared before being detained in the Winnipeg Remand Centre.
