Police nab suspects in Pembina Hwy machete attack at Polo Park area hotel

Earlier this week New 4 told you about an unprovoked machete attack on a male in his 20s while he was walking along Pembina Highway.

It happened just before 5:00 am near Dudley Avenue. Police found the man suffering from significant blood loss and immediately applied a tactical tourniquet to stem the flow of blood.

The victim was taken to hospital in unstable condition.

The Major Crimes Unit took over the investigation and were able to identify two suspects and tracked them down to a hotel in the Polo Park area on Friday evening, October 18, 2019.

The investigation also revealed that the pair were also allegedly responsible for the robbery of a convenience store on Osborne Street about an hour and a half after the machete attack. During the robbery the machete was brandished in a threatening manner.

Arlen Justin Drew Robert Sumner, 20 from Winnipeghas been charged for his alleged involvement with: 

  • Aggravated Assault
  • Possession of a Weapon (x2)
  • Robbery
  • Mischief Under $5,000/Obstruct in Enjoyment
  • Fail to Comply Condition Recognizance by Judge/Justice (x5)

Police also arrested a 17-year-old female in connection to the incidents. She is facing charges for her alleged involvement including Aggravated Assault, Robbery, Mischief Under $5,000/Obstruct in Enjoyment.

Both suspects were detained in custody.
