Armed stand-off suspect arrested

A 46-year-old man involved in an armed stand-off with RCMP has been taken into custody and is facing multiple charges.

Fisher Branch RCMP was called to a home in Peguis First Nation for the report of a stabbing. When officers arrived they found a 53-year-old man suffering from serious injuries. The suspect was known to the victim and officers immediately began to search for him.

Around 4:00 pm on January 30, 2023, the suspect was found at a residence in Peguis First Nation. Police say that the suspect was armed with a firearm and barricaded himself inside the home.

RCMP contained the area and called in the Emergency Response Team.

A short time later smoke was seen coming from the building due to a fire. Firefighters were called and while they were attempting to put out the fire officers found the suspect lying on the ground just outside the house. He was placed into custody and treated at the scene by Emergency Medical Services. The suspect was transported to the hospital, treated and released.

Wescott Sutherland has been charged for his alleged involvement with Aggravated Assault, Assault with a Weapon, Arson, Possession of a Weapon for a Dangerous Purpose, and Theft of a Motor Vehicle. Police say that additional charges may be laid related to the firearm.

Sutherland remains in custody as the investigation continues.
