Armed robbery suspect involved in police pursuit ends up in hospital

A suspect allegedly involved in an armed robbery at a beer vendor on McPhillips Street on Wednesday night is in hospital after crashing his vehicle during a police pursuit.

Police say that two men robbed the vendor then fled in a stolen vehicle just before midnight.

Officers located the stolen vehicle about 90 minutes later in the St. John’s neighbourhood. The vehicle sped away and police gave chase. The suspect made it to the highway ramp between the eastbound lanes of the Perimeter Highway and the southbound lanes of Main Street when he lost control of the vehicle.

The driver then tried to run from the scene but he collapsed. He was transported to hospital in critical condition but has been upgraded too stable. Medical staff at Health Sciences Centre determined the suspect was suffering from a collapsed lung and broken ribs as a result of the collision.

Due to the suspect requiring hospitalization due to a serious injury the Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) has been called in to investigate the incident.

IIU investigators are looking for anyone who may heave information or video footage of the incident to contact them at 1-844-667-6060.

The investigation continues.
