Police say the safety officers had go into a residence in the First Nation community and were confronted by the 29-year-old male brandishing a knife.
RCMP officers from Island Lake drove to the community and found the male on the main road.
As officers approached the suspect, who was still holding the knife, he threatened to kill them. The male lunged at the officers several times. Officers fired a taser at the man multiple time to no effect.
While waiting for more backup the officer attempted to contain the suspect. The man then threatened to kill himself.
One of the officers was eventually able to distract the suspect long enough that a second officer was able to spay the male with pepper spray.
The suspect dropped the knife and was taken into custody.
