RCMP have arrested and charged a 25-year-old male after he had intentionally shot at police on a rural property near Moosehorn, Manitoba.
The incident started around 2:45 pm on Thursday October 1, 2020, when RCMP from Lundar and Ashern were notified that a male with a gun was threatening to shoot police.
When officers arrived they saw one male on the property carrying a rifle. They noticed that the man appeared to have a significant amount of ammunition as well.
Attempts were made by loud speaker to have the male put down his weapon without success. At this point the man began shooting towards where the officers had taken cover.
RCMP say the male appeared to be intoxicated and agitated.
Officers continued to attempted to get the male to disarm himself .
Around 5:30 pm it became evident that the male had run out of ammunition, officers moved in and placed the male under arrest.
“This situation was resolved safely with no injuries, and I am very grateful for that,” said Inspector Chris Moore, Incident Commander. “Our officers are in dangerous situations day in and day out, but when a firearm is involved, it takes that danger to another level. The training these officers receive as well as the genuine concern they have for the people of their community kept this incident from escalating and allowed for a peaceful resolution.”
RCMP say that no shots were fired by RCMP during the incident and no one was injured during the incident.
The suspect was taken to hospital as a precaution and examined.He was released and remains in police custody.
The man is facing a number of charges for his alleged involvement including Possession of a Firearm Knowing it is Unauthorized, Discharge with Intent x3, Reckless Discharge of a Firearm, and Possession of a Firearm Contrary to Court Order. RCMP say other charges are being considered.
RCMP continue to investigate.
