At approximately 3:00 p.m. on January 10, 2025, the Winnipeg Police Service responded to a report of an armed male inside a parked vehicle at the intersection of Home Street and Notre Dame Avenue.
The incident began when the registered owner of the vehicle returned to find a broken window and a male suspect sleeping inside. Notably, an edged weapon and a firearm were clearly visible. The owner promptly stepped away from the vehicle and called the police for assistance.
Members of the Tactical Support Team (TST), along with officers from the Central District General Patrol, swiftly responded to the scene. They contained the vehicle, safely extracted the suspect, and arrested him without incident. During the arrest, an imitation air pistol and a machete were seized as evidence.
The suspect, identified as Maurice Kelly Ryan Thomas, 31, of Winnipeg, now faces multiple charges including:
- Possession of a Weapon (2 counts)
- Possession of Firearm, Restricted/Prohibited Weapon, Firearm Part or Ammunition Contrary to Prohibition Order (3 counts)
- Mischief Under $5,000/Obstruct in Enjoyment
- Fail to Comply with Probation Order
- Fail to Comply with Condition of Release Order
Thomas has been detained in custody following his arrest.
