Winnipeg Police responded to a call at about 3:40 pm on Thursday, October 25, 2018, after a man locked himself inside the beer vendor behind Canad Inns on Pembina Highway at Plaza Drive.
Several employees inside the business at the time the armed suspect locked the doors were able to quickly get out of the building.
Police called in the Tactical Support Team, K-9 along with Crisis Negotiators.
Around 7:20 pm the man attempted to flee and was shot several times with non-lethal weapons. He was taken into custody and taken to hospital as a precaution.
As the investigation into the incident unfolded police say that they learned the suspect had been involved in a number of other incidents earlier in the day.
According to investigators, the suspect fueled his vehicle at a McPhillips Street gas station at around 7:30 am. He then indicated he had a weapon and demanded money from the employee. He also stole several products and fled.
Just after 2:30 pm the suspect ordered food from a Portage Avenue restaurant then demanded and made off with an undisclosed amount of cash.
About thirty minutes later police saw the suspect driving a station wagon near Portage Avenue and Woodhaven Boulevard. The suspect began driving erratically and police began a pursuit but were forced to abort it shortly afterwards.
At about 3:10 pm the suspect was on Marion Street stopped in traffic when he hopped out of the station wagon he was driving and carjacked a truck driven by a 61-year-old male at knifepoint.
Police have identified the suspect as Alexander Branislav Jovanovich, aged 33 from Winnipeg. He has been charged for his alleged involvement with:
- Flight while Pursued by Peace Officer
- Dangerous Operation of Motor Vehicle (x2)
- Robbery (x3)
- Possession of a Weapon (x3)
- Theft Under $5000
- Fail to Comply with Probation Order (x4)
He was detained in custody.
