Four people hurt in overnight stand-off with police
RCMP in Portage la Prairie were dealing with a situation that began late Monday night, July 17, 2017.
Police had received a report of a suspicious male in a white car sitting in the driveway of a home on Oak Bay in Portage la Prairie. When officers arrived to check it out they learned that a man inside the home had a firearm.
RCMP called in the Emergency Response Team (ERT), negotiators and Police Dog Services.
Police were able to determine that four people were in the home but did not know how many firearms were inside.Officers attempted to enter the home in the early morning hours of July 18, 2017 but found that barricades had been set up inside the residence.
Police ordered those in the house to exit but got no response. Tear gas was then deployed causing two females, 25 and 16, to exit the premises.
The RCMP ERT forcibly entered the home and arrested two 27-year-old males.
Everyone inside the home was treated for minor injuries.
The two men are in custody and are facing charges while the females have been released and are being treated as witnesses.
According to RCMP one of the men was known to them because of a stolen vehicle investigation that happened on July 15, 2017. It is believed that he stole a white car from the same residence on Oak Bay. Officers had been investigating the vehicle theft. A second theft occurred in the early morning hours of July 17, 2017, this time gasoline was stolen from a station on the Trans-Canada Highway. The vehicle involved in that theft matched the description of the vehicle that was in the driveway as police responded to the Oak Bay incident.
The investigation continues.
