Another person has died in Manitoba due to COVID-19, says public health officials

Manitoba chief provincial public health officer Dr. Brent Roussin announced another 6 cases of COVID-19 on Friday April 10, 2020, bringing the total number of lab-confirmed and probable case in the province to 230.

Roussin said that a male in his 70s has succumbed to the virus bringing the total number of fatalities in Manitoba to four. The male lived in Winnipeg and had underlying health concerns.

10 people are currently being treated in hospital with five of those in intensive care.

92 people have recovered from COVID-19.

There are currently 134 active cases in Manitoba.

Cadham Provincial Laboratory performed 962 tests on Thursday bringing the total number of tests since early February to 16,220.

Roussin reiterated the importance of adhering to strict social distancing practices. Manitobans should stay home. Travel to cottages, family or religious gatherings should not be happening according to Roussin.

On Thursday April 9, 2020, the province and the City of Winnipeg announced social distancing enforcement. Those breaching public health orders on city property can see fines up to $1,000 and / or imprisonment of up to 6 months.

Provincially individuals can see fines of $ 486 for individuals and $2,542 for businesses who violate public health orders.

The province has opened a new facility to provide people experiencing homelessness with a place to self-isolate. The site has 39 individual units for those who have tested positive or are suspected to have COVID-19. Clients will need to be referred to the facility from shelter sites, testing sites or health care providers.
