The intersection of Highway 1 and Highway 16 just west of Portage la Prairie is once again the scene of a fatal collision between a passenger vehicle and a semi-truck.
On Sunday night, August 27, 2017, around 8:30 pm RCMP were called to the intersection for the second time in as many days.

A 19-year-old female from Alonsa and a 17-year-old male from Portage la Prairie had to be extricated from the car they were in but were pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators say that the semi-truck, carrying a heavy load of pipe, was travelling west on Highway 1 when it ran the red light and slammed into the passenger car that was heading south on Highway 16.

The 23-year-old driver of the semi, Gurjant Singh, has been arrested and charged with dangerous driving and criminal negligence causing death.
Police say that alcohol was not a factor in the collision.
Singh has been held in custody.
This is the third fatal collision at the busy intersection in the past eight days.
On Saturday, August 26, 2017, a 39-year-old male pedestrian was killed at the same intersection after he was hit by a semi and a week prior three people died and two were critically injured when the minivan they were in collided with a semi.
