The City of Winnipeg’s annual Dutch Elm Disease (DED) burn program will begin on December 21 and continue until the end of March 2021.
The burns happen at riverside locations hewer crews are not able to use a vehicle to remove diseased trees that have been cut down. The controlled burns follow strict guidelines and are conducted by permit by the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service.
The city is asking people who may come upon a burn site to stay clear and refrain from disturbing wood piles and debris. Under the Forest Health Protection Act it is not permitted to transport or store untreated elm wood.
