Annual Controlled Burns to Commence in Winnipeg’s Natural Areas

The City of Winnipeg has announced that its annual controlled burns in natural areas are set to begin this week, weather permitting. The burns are expected to be conducted throughout the city until approximately June 14, with operations only taking place under suitable wind conditions and with appropriate fire guards in place.

Controlled burns play a crucial role in the preservation and restoration of prairies. Without fire, these endangered plant communities are susceptible to weed invasions. The City of Winnipeg has been conducting controlled burns on its tall grass prairies since 1986, demonstrating a long-standing commitment to maintaining the health and vitality of these ecosystems.

For more information on controlled burns, residents are encouraged to visit the City of Winnipeg’s official website and navigate to the ‘Controlled Burns’ section.
