An American hunter was found guilty of shooting a grizzly bear in northern Manitoba in June of 2015. Manitoba Sustainable Development says that Conservation Officers discovered the bear during an investigation that was initiated after they received a tip that a licensed hunter had killed the bear.

Grizzly bears are protected under The Endangered Species and Ecosystems Act.

Carl Brown Jr. from South Carolina was found guilty of killing an extirpated species and ordered to pay a $10,000 fine plus $2,000 in court costs on March 29, 2017.

Although grizzly bears once roamed much of western North America and across the Prairies as far east as the Red River valley, they all but disappeared from the province until recent sightings were reported in northern Manitoba.  Sightings of the bear are rare in Manitoba but an increasing number of sightings have been reported in recent years.

The bears can be found in BC, Alberta,Yukon, Northwest Territories and Nunavut as well as in the northern U.S. Washington,Oregon and parts of California.
