Altona Police charge foster parent with defrauding CFS

Police in the Southern Manitoba community of Altona says a woman allegedly defrauded CFS system of more than $42,000 over the past nine years. Altona is about 115 kilometres south of Winnipeg.

Altona Police was contacted by Child and Family Services and Manitoba Department of Families over concerns they had about a woman providing foster care.

They said that they believed the foster parent had made a number of false claims about respite care for two children in her care between 2009 and 2018. According to a caseworker, a person who the foster parent had named as a respite caregiver had never provided respite care for the foster parent.

Police investigated and have charged the 40-year-old woman from Altona with three counts of fraud over $5,000.

She was released on a promise to appear in court.

Police say that the children are now both adults and are no longer in her care.
