An Altona police officer will not face any charges in relation to an alleged incident that occurred while transporting a female youth.
In November 2018 after another encounter with Altona police, a female youth brought allegations that an officer had pointed a gun at her head while she was being taken to Winnipeg in a previous incident in 2015.
The Independent Investigation Unit (IIU) was informed of the allegation and began an investigation.
She told investigators that while she was being taken to Winnipeg a security guard and a police officer pulled her from the vehicle and pointed a gun at her head.
After talking to the female, the subject officer, security guard and three other officers who were aware of the alleged incident the IIU determined there is insufficient evidence to lay any charge against the officer.
The mandate of IIU does not include authorizing criminal charges in the absence of cogent, trustworthy and sufficient evidence to support that decision.
IIU Civilian Director Zane Tessler noted that there were a number of discrepancies in the statements from the female who made the allegation. The IIU noted that although the female’s memory of the incident remained consistent over the years she couldn’t remember, for example, who had pointed the weapon at her the security guard, the police officer or both.
