After a years-long joint investigation into the killing of Bud Paul, police have identified and charged a 41-year-old man in connection to the murder.
On August 7, 2020, Winnipeg police were contacted by a concerned co-worker that Paul had not been to work and could not be reached for several days. A missing person investigation was begun.
Three days later, Paul’s car was found burned-out on Queen Street in Winnipeg.
On August 11, officers with the Manitoba First Nations Police Service located a body that had been hidden in the deep brush in Roseau River Anishinabe First Nation. The body was later confirmed to be Bud Paul.
Investigators from the Winnipeg Police Service, Manitoba First Nations Police Service and RCMP began a joint investigation and soon learned of surveillance video from a liquor store in Neepawa on August 1, 2020. Paul is seen in the video along with two other people. The video was the last known sighting of Paul alive.
In December 2020, investigators were led to Paul’s last known residence on Hespeler Avenue and a search was conducted. On the same day, police identified the two primary suspects as a 36-year-old female and a 39-year-old male. Police were able to establish that the suspects and victim knew each other.
The female suspect was arrested and taken to RCMP HQ for questioning. She was later released without charges.
Over the next year-and-a-half, investigators continued to conduct interviews and follow up on tips received from the public. Forensic evidence was also being examined by the RCMP laboratory in Ottawa and also in a lab in the United States.
On August 30, 2022, investigators arrested and charged Aaron Mousseau from Winnipeg for his alleged involvement with First Degree Murder.
Police say that there are no additional charges expected at this time
