Manitoba’s police watchdog agency the Independent Investigation Unit (IIU) is looking into an allegation that a male was seriously injured after being physically restrained and handcuffed by RCMP officers.
According to the IIU, the officers were dispatched to an unknown incident on June 8, 2021, at a home in southwest Manitoba. When officers arrived they encountered a belligerent male and after an altercation occurred the male was then restrained and placed in handcuffs.
It was later determined that no offence occurred and the male was released.
On June 19 the male contacted police and reported he had sustained a broken rib.
Due to the nature of the injury the IIU is mandated to investigate.
