Alleged Assault by WPS Officers on Woman

The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) is looking into allegations made by a 19 year old woman about an incident October 17, 2015.

The woman alleges two WPS officers assaulted her, one male officer punched her in the cheek and a second male officer stomped on her knee. She claims to have sustained three torn ligaments as a result of her encounter with police.

She had been detained under the Intoxicated Persons Detention Act.

The woman complained to the Winnipeg Police Service about the alleged assault on April 19, six months after the alleged assault and it was reported to the IIU on April 20th.

The IIU civilian director, Zane Tessler, has determined it is in the public interest to have the unit investigate.

The IIU investigates all serious incidents involving police officers in Manitoba, whether occurring on or off duty.
