Delays are not expected says airport authority
Winnipeg Richardson International Airport is saying that delays are not expected as 150 of their employees march the picket line after talks broke down Sunday evening.
Just after 3:00 am Monday, July 24, 2017, the Canadian Transportation Employees represented by the Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC) set up a picket line at the arrivals entrance to the international airport.
PSAC represents duty managers, administrative workers, various tradespersons, IT workers, airfield maintenance, and labourers
“PSAC and its members are disappointed with the Airport’s decision to not address those issues tabled last October, and which remain unresolved tonight”, said Marianne Hladun, PSAC Regional Executive Vice-President, Prairies Region.
According to the Airport, they tabled a final offer Sunday evening that included a 7.5% wage increase over the 5 year length of the proposed contract and a commitment to have no layoffs.
In real dollars, the proposed changes would move the salary range for unionized employees at the airport from the current range of $25- $56 per hour to $28 – $65 per hour. The lowest salaried full-time employee in the company would move from $49,000 a year to $54,500 a year, while those at the top of the range would move from $109,000 to over $126,000 a year. Overtime and shift premiums would be on top of this amount.
“Our mandate is to operate our airport in a fiscally prudent manner in the best interests of our community,” said Barry Rempel, WAA President and CEO. “We respect our employees and value what they contribute to our company every day.”
The workers have been without a contract since June 30, 2016, and in negotiations since October 2016.
