AIR-1, the Winnipeg Police Service helicopter, was instrumental in the apprehension of a home invasion suspect after they spotted a vehicle that
Police say that AIR-1 was on patrol near Whittier Park when they noticed a vehicle stuck in the snow.
The driver was able to get free but AIR-1 continued to track the vehicle as it matched the description of a stolen Toyota Corolla that had been taken earlier in the week from the Tyndall Park area.
Ground units ran the vehicle’s plate and confirmed that the vehicle was, in fact, stolen. As they attempted to stop the car it took off. Officers on the ground dropped back and AIR-1 tracked the vehicle as it wound through the north end eventually getting stuck after making its way to a back lane at Cumberland Avenue and Kennedy Street.
Police moved in and arrested the 19-year-old driver.
A search of the vehicle revealed a machete, break-in tools and Meth.
Police also learned after arresting the suspect that he was allegedly involved in a home invasion on Wednesday, March 6, 2019, where two people had been injured. Police say they are continuing to investigate the home invasion.
Joseph Peter Hunter from Winnipeg has been charged for his alleged involvement with: Theft of Motor Vehicle, Possession of Scheduled Substance (Methamphetamine}, Possession of a Weapon, Possession of Break-In Instrument(s), Fail to Comply with Probation Order, Possession of Firearm, Restricted/Prohibited Weapon or Ammunition Contrary to Prohibition Order (x2), Aggravated Assault, Assault Cause Bodily Harm, Break Enter & Commit – Dwelling House.
He also had an outstanding warrant for his arrest for Fail to Comply with Probation
Hunter was detained in custody.
