AIR-1 spots large fire on William Avenue, alerts firefighters

AIR-1 spotted a large fire in a William Ave home while patrolling early Friday morning, June 19, 2020.

Several people could be seen outside the structure trying to alert other residents inside.

AIR-1 could not see any fire units responding to the blaze and requested that the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service be alerted.

Ground officers arrived on scene and used a fire extinguisher to gain entry to the two-and-a-half storey multi-family house. Some people had self-evacuated but officers helped six additional people get out of the building.

When fire crews arrived on scene just before 3:00 am they encountered thick smoke and flames coming from the structure and launched an offensive attack. AIR-1 helped the fire incident commander by providing situational awareness from above.

Neighbouring homes were evacuated as a precaution while firefighters battled the blaze.

The fire was declared under control at 4:09 am.

No injuries were reported.

Residents from the neighbouring homes were able to return one fire crews had completed their work on scene.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
