Addictions Foundation of Manitoba confirms cases of COVID-19

The Addictions Foundation of Manitoba (AFM) have confirmed three cases of COVID-19 within facilities they operate.

In an email to News 4, AFM said that two residents from River Point Centre in Winnipeg and one staff member at the Parkwood facility in Brandon have tested positive for COVID-19

Although AFM said that they have completed a deep clean of both facilities, staff members say that is only partially true and that ongoing cleaning of high-touch surfaces is non-existent and has not happened regularly in the past two months.

AFM said in their statement that “Public health are also notifying those people who have been named as close contacts and are providing direction to staff and clients on the types of precautions to take during this time.”

Both residents and staff contacted on Thursday, November 12, say that they have not been contacted about precautions to take within the facility by either public health or officials within the facility.

Residents did note that up until today they were permitted to come and go as they please but have now been restricted to the grounds of the facility.

” Nothing has changed, nothing has shut down,” said a staff member at the facility when asked about the RAMM Clinic and in-house programming at River Point Centre. “10 more people have been admitted to the in-house program since Monday, including five today.”

AFM said that “Offices and programs across the province remain open and continue to offer support and services to individuals as we recognize these are challenging times.” They also noted that they are currently implementing processes and procedures to address a case of COVID-19 across all AFM sites and will be enacting these plans to protect the health of staff and clients.

News 4 has reached out to AFM for more information regarding their plan as well as the concerns and allegations made by staff and residents.

Editors note: News 4 has agreed to not identity staff or residents out of their fear of repercussions.
