Semi driver charged for driving away from collision

RCMP have charged the 26-year-old driver of a semi truck involved in a multi-vehicle collision on the Perimeter Highway at Pipeline Road on Thursday evening, January 28, 2021.

An RCMP officer on patrol witnessed the aftermath of the collision that had just occurred in the eastbound lanes. It was apparent by looking at the vehicles that an SUV had been hit from behind which pushed it into a transit van. The transit van then collided with a car with in turn hit a pickup truck.

A 57-year-old female driver of the SUV was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The 48-year-old male driver of the van suffered minor injuries. The 25-year-old driver of the car was not injured but he did have a suspended drivers licence. Police say that he will be receiving a ticket.

While police were checking on the people involved in the collision a witness reported that a semi parked on the shoulder of the roadway was also involved in the collision. Shortly afterwards the semi driver pulled away and turned onto pipeline road. The officer pursued the semi and made a traffic stop on the truck. The driver was arrested for Failing to Remain at the Scene of a Collision.

The investigation has determined that the four vehicles that were hit from behind had been stopped at a traffic light at Pipeline Road when the SUV was hit from behind by the semi causing a chain reaction.

On top of failing to remain at the scene the semi driver has been charged with a number of Highway Traffic Act offences and a Serious Offence Notice. Further Criminal Code charges are still being considered.

RCMP continue to investigate.
