Fire crews responded to a number of fires overnight beginning with a garbage bin fire just minutes before midnight.
When firefighters arrived to the scene at Maryland Street and Sargent Avenue smoke and flames were coming out of a large garbage bin full of what appeared to be construction and other debris.
Although the fire was under control fairly quickly firefighters picked through the rubble in order to put out hot spots.
At one point during the incident a ladder truck was brought in to check the roof of the adjacent building.
REDWOOD FIRE
Firefighters responded to a monitored alarm in a two-storey house in the 400 block of Redwood Avenue at 2:55 am. They encountered heavy smoke and flames as they arrived on the scene and launched an offensive attack.
The nine residents were able to get out of the building before emergency crews arrived. Paramedics assessed the residents and none required hospitalization.
The fire was declared under control at 4:10 am. The building suffered significant water, smoke and fire damage and the cause of the blaze is under investigation.
The City of Winnipeg deployed their Emergency Social Services team to help the displaced residents find alternate shelter.
Simcoe Street
Just after 8:30 am Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service crews were called to a fire in a vacant two-and-a-half-storey house in the 300 block of Simcoe Street.
Smoke was seen coming from the structure as firefighters arrived on the scene and an offensive attack was launched.
The fire was declared under control within 30 minutes.
A search of the building was conducted and no one was found inside.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
