UPDATED
Southbound Henderson Highway was shut down north of Kimberley Avenue after a Winnipeg Transit bus collided with a house just after 5:00 pm Thursday evening, December 17, 2020.
It is not known at this time what caused the bus to veer off of the roadway metres south of the Kimberley Avenue knocking down a traffic signal and tearing through a hedge and several front lawns before crashing into a storey-and-a-half home.
The Amalgamated Transit Union Local 1505 that represents Winnipeg Transit drivers, reported that the driver of the bus may have experienced some kind of medical issue prior to the collision. He was taken to hospital in unstable condition but later upgraded to stable.
Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responded with multi fire and paramedic units. Fire officials on the scene said that eight people, including the driver, were transported to various hospitals. At least one of the victims was a child who was sent to Children’s Hospital.
The cause of the collision is currently under investigation by the Winnipeg Police Service Traffic Unit. Officers could be seen placing yellow evidence markers along the path the bus followed after it left the roadway.
Police on scene said that they expect that Henderson Highway will be closed for most of the evening as officers investigate and the bus is removed.
