Medical Examiner to determine cause of inmate’s death

Stony Mountain Institution announced on Wednesday, December 16, 2020, that an inmate had died at the facility on Tuesday.

The deceased, Melvis Owen, had been incarcerated at the prison since August of 2018 and was serving a sentence of five years and five months for Assault Causing Bodily Harm.

Officials from the Correctional Service of Canada said that the cause of death will be determined by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.

It is not known if the death was related to the COVID-19 outbreak at the institution but CSC officials have indicated that they will make an announcement if that was the case on the investigation is complete.

Owen’s next of kin has been notified of his death.
