New micro-credential offered for COVID-19 Immunizers

Red River College is offering another micro-credential related to COVID-19. This time the post-secondary educator is offering a course that will allow people who are going to be administering the COVID-19 vaccine the opportunity to upgrade or extend their skills.

Although there are a number of medical professions that can already administer the vaccine under their scope of practice the province expanded the regulated professions that can be part of the COVID-19 vaccination campaign.

The eight hour course will be offered at no cost and includes online learning and an in-person lab. The course will teach participants about the virus, learn about immunization and related anatomy, learn best practices when vaccinating clients and learn safe COVID-19 vaccine procedures.

“Manitoba’s health-care workers are already an integral part of our COVID-19 response and we are looking for more people to step forward and join ‘Team Manitoba’. This new micro-credential will help ensure those hired to administer the vaccine can upgrade their skills if they need it, so they can be ready to vaccinate safely and quickly,” said Premier Brian Pallister.

The province is encouraging medical students, retired health-care workers and others with a critical baseline of knowledge and skills to be part of Manitoba’s COVID-19 vaccine campaign.

The new micro-credential will begin to be offered on December 15 in Winnipeg. Participants must first be hired by Shared Health Manitoba as immunization team members in order to take the course.

Those who will be permitted to administer the vaccine include physicians, physician assistants, clinical assistants, nurse practitioners, registered nurses, registered psychiatric nurses, licensed practical nurses, and paramedics. The expanded list of regulated professions includes pharmacists, midwives, dentists, physiotherapists, lab technologists, veterinarians, veterinarian technologists, respiratory therapists, occupational therapists, student doctors, physician assistants, dentists, medical laboratory technologists, occupational therapists, physiotherapists, respiratory therapists and retired health-care professionals including those who may no longer be registered with their professional college.
