Doctors to be compensated for COVID-19 related sick time

Doctors who develop symptoms, test positive or are exposed to a confirmed case of COVID-19 will be compensated for their sick time under a new benefit program announced today.

“Across Manitoba, doctors are caring for patients with a variety of health conditions, in the midst of a pandemic that may require them to isolate and miss work,” said Health Seniors and Active Living Minister Cameron Friesen. “This benefit will ensure physicians are supported when they have to step away from their clinical duties to isolate, or if they become infected with COVID-19.”

The new benefit will cover doctor’s wages for up to 10 days of isolation at a time and doctors can make separate claims for up to a total 20 missed working days due to illness or exposure.

Eligible doctors are those working in hospitals, personal care homes and community practice that miss work due to a COVID-19 diagnosis or confirmed exposure.

The benefit is retroactive to September 28, 2020 and continues until the end of the pandemic.

The benefit does not apply to isolation the is required due to travel or if the physician is exposed at home or in the community.
