Suspect gets stuck in a tunnel while trying to evade police

RCMP in Portage la Prairie was called to a West Drive home in the community after a male had entered a home and threatened the people inside around 8:30 Sunday morning, October 11, 2020.

Police say that the homeowner was able to get the male to leave the house. He was last seen heading west through a nearby field,

As the investigation unfolded officers were led to a home on Baker Avenue. As police arrived they learned that the suspect had tried to evade police by climbing into a tunnel under the house. The suspect told officers he had a gun.

The RCMP Emergency Response Team (ERT) was called in and they were able to determine the suspect was not armed.

Officers found an outside sump pit connected to the tunnel. When they looked inside they saw the suspects legs. The suspect was stuck from the waist up.

Police freed the male but his freedom was short lived and he was placed into custody.

The male is facing charges for his alleged involvement including Break and Enter, Uttering Threats, and Resisting Arrest. He is also facing an Assault charge for the previous incident.

The suspect was detained in custody.
