Careless use of firearm charges laid after man shoots himself

RCMP in Thompson say that two people have been charged in connection to a shooting incident at a Thompson apartment building on October 10. 2020.

Officers in the northern community were called to a suite on Princeton Drive after a tenant found a bullet on the floor. Investigators say that the bullet had travelled through the wall to the sweet next door as well as a cupboard.

A search warrant was executed at a neighbouring suite where officers seized a handgun and ammunition. A 39-year-old woman who lives in the suite was arrested and charged with several firearms related offences.

Police identified a second suspect. The next day the suspect turned himself in at the Thompson detachment. The 30-year-old male suspect was suffering from a gunshot wound when he was arrested. He was taken to hospital and treated for non-life threatening injuries.

Police say that the male had been handling the gun in an unsafe manner when it went off.

The male suspect has been charged with Careless Use of a Firearm, Unsafe Storage of a Firearm and Possession of a loaded Restricted Firearm.

Police continue to investigate.
