Live fire training building in Brandon to be replaced

After 22-years in service, the Manitoba government will be replacing the live fire training building at the Manitoba Emergency Services College (MESC) in Brandon.

The tower located at the MESC facility at the Brandon Airport is used to give student firefighters experience in fighting fires in real-life situations in a controlled, safe environment.

The “Burn House” as it is known to those who use it has come to the end of its operational life and need to be upgraded or replaced to meet current national training standards.

“The Manitoba Emergency Services College here in Brandon is a critical training facility for firefighters and we want to ensure they have the best teaching tools available so when they graduate they are ready to respond to emergencies and save lives,” Municipal Relations Minister Rochelle Squires said. “This building has been heavily used for more than two decades and needs to be upgraded so students can train safely for this important career.”

Construction of the new building is slated to begin next Spring. The current build will continue to be used until construction is completed on the new building.

The province says that about 40 students graduate from MESC each year an go on to careers with different emergency agencies in Manitoba and across Canada.
