The Manitoba government is looking for feedback on possible legislation to combat rural crime and metal theft.

Justice Minister Cliff Cullen said that Manitoba is considering adopting legislation developed in other provinces to improve trespass occupiers’ liability laws and discourage stolen metal sales.

“It will be critical to consult with law enforcement on this issue, but we want to hear from people in rural, northern and remote areas, as well as other Manitobans, about their experiences with crime, so we can ensure the justice system responds to their needs,” said Cullen.

The proposed changes to legislation could include amendments to the Petty Trespass Act in order to make the law easier to enforce and help prevent confrontations between property owners and trespassers. Amendments could also be made to the Occupiers Liability Act to clarify a landowners responsibility for injury is fair and reasonable when someone is on their property without permission.
