IIU investigating after suspects run from officers and get bitten by police dog

The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) is investigating an incident that led up to two suspects sustaining bites from a police service dog.

According to police on August 13, 2020, several suspects were being arrested on Sandy Bay First Nation when a number of them fled the area. Police used a K-9 to apprehend two of the suspects. Both suspects were bitten by the police dog. They were arrested and taken to the hospital in Portage la Prairie.

One of the two required surgery as a result of the bite.

Since the dog bite required hospitalization on an in-patient basis it is considered a serious injury and the IIU is mandated to investigate.

Anyone with information or video footage that can help investigators is asked to call the IIU at 1-844-667-6060.
