IIU says Manitoba First Nations Police officer-involved shooting justified

After a year-long investigation, the Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) has cleared Manitoba First Nations Police Service officers from any wrongdoing in the April 2019 fatal shooting of an armed suspect.

The incident happened on April 2, 2019. Police responded to reports of a male shooting out the windows of his residence on Long Plain First Nation.

When officers arrived on scene the suspect shot at officers who returned fire. The male was struck several times and pronounced dead at the scene.

IIU civilian director, Zane Tessler, found the use of lethal force by the officers was justified, unavoidable and necessary to prevent death or injury to the officers.

The toxicology report on the deceased show the presence of ethanol alcohol and THC (cannabis) in his system.
