911 call centre employee tests positive for COVID-19

Winnipeg Police Service chief Danny Smyth announced on Wednesday April 8, 2020, than a 911 all centre civilian employee tested positive for COVID-19.

Smyth said the employee last worked on April 1st. She was feeling ill and was tested for the virus on Saturday April 4th.

Once it was known the employee’s results came back as positive four other people who were working with her were sent home to self-isolate.

Smyth said that other employees were brought in to cover shifts and new screening protocols have been put into place for call centre employees. Temperatures will be taken as employees come to work in the call centre with plans to expand that measure to other departments in the future.

So far about 10% of police employees have self-isolated at some point during the pandemic, mostly due to travel. Seven employees remain in self-isolation at this time but the call centre employee is the only confirmed-positive case within the Winnipeg Police Service.
