Winnipeg declares state of emergency, passes tax-relief measures

Winnipeg city council declared a local state of emergency on Friday April 3, 2020.

The declaration gives the city wide ranging powers including the ability to take over properties if needed as well as restrict access to certain areas within the municipality.

Councillors passed a tax-relief package 15 to 1 that will defer property taxes that are normally due at the end of June to the beginning of October. Business taxes will also be deferred until the beginning of September.

Fees associated with the Tax Instalment Payment Plan (TIPP) for both property and business taxes will also be waived until October 1, 2020.

Today was the last council meeting that will be held in person. Moving forward all council and committee meetings will be held using electronic technology to ensure social distancing is maintained.
