Officers assaulted in two separate incidents

On Thursday, February 4, 2020, four officers were assaulted in two separate but equally dangerous incidents.

Just before 2:30 pm officers with the Guns and Gangs Unit watched a man who was known to them get behind the wheel of an SUV and drive away. Officers were aware that the man’s driving privileges had been revoked when his drivers licence had been previously suspended.

A traffic stop was initiated near William Avenue and Harriet Street.

Officers approach on either side of the vehicle and began talking to the people inside. Police say that the driver then suddenly put the SUV in gear and accelerated while in reverse.

Both officers were dragged by the vehicle. One of the officers was being held by the female passenger by the arm and after the SUV hit a nearby car was able to break free and jump into the SUV to avoid being run over.

As the SUV moved forward it almost hit the other officer.

The officer in the vehicle was able to stop the vehicle near William Avenue and Isabel Street.

The driver and passenger were arrested.

A search of the vehicle turned up a loaded .22 calibre handgun along with multiple rounds of ammunition.

Quentin Gerald Richard Bird, 30 from Winnipeg is facing a number of charges for his alleged involvement including:

  • Cause Bodily Harm by Criminal Negligence
  • Possession of Firearm, Restricted/Prohibited Weapon or Ammunition Contrary to Prohibition Order
  • Possession of a Prohibited or Restricted Weapon Knowing its Poss is Unauthorized
  • Possession of a Loaded Prohibited or Restricted Firearm
  • Unauthorized Possession of a Firearm in Motor Vehicle
  • Possession of a Firearm Knowing Serial Number has been Tampered With
  • Drive suspended/while disqualified (Highway Traffic Act)

23-year-old Janessa Alicia Gordon from Sioux Lookout, Ontario has been charged for her alleged involvement with Assault Peace Officer.

Both suspects were detained in custody.

The second incident occurred around 10:00 pm.

While patrolling near Flora and Arlington officers noticed a stolen SUV parked in front of a home with on male in the driver’s seat. The vehicle had been reported stolen from the Burrows Central area after the keys had been left inside.

As the officers were conducting a traffic stop on the vehicle the driver drove the SUV into the police cruiser.

Both vehicles were damaged in the collision.

The driver was taken into custody shortly after the collision.

When police searched the SUV they found a sword.

29-year-old Cody Henry Bousquet from Winnipeg is facing a number of charges for his alleged involvement including:

  •  Assault a Peace Officer with a Weapon (x2)
  •  Poss of Property Obtained by Crime Over $5000
  •  Poss of a Weapon
  •  Fail to Comply with Probation Order
  •  Drive suspended/while disqualified (Highway Traffic Act)

Police say that Bousquet was also wanted on a Brandon Police Service warrant for Fail to Comply with Probation Order.

He was detained in custody.
