Teen suffers a serious injury during an arrest, IIU investigating

The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) is looking into the circumstances that resulted in a serious injury during an arrest late Saturday night.

The IIU says that members of the Winnipeg Police Service responded to the 2600 block of Pembina Highway on January 18, 2020, for a report of a female in distress.

When police arrived they noticed the 19-year-old woman appeared to be intoxicated. They claim that when they tried to take the woman into custody she resisted.

The teen complained of soreness to her left arm after she had been placed in cuffs. She was taken to Victoria Hospital Urgent Care where they found she was suffering from fractures to her left arm.

The IIU is mandated to investigate due to a fractured armed being defined as a serious injury.

Anyone with information or video that can help investigators is asked to call 1-844-667-6060.
