RCMP officers cleared after suspect injured during arrest

Portage la Prairie RCMP officers will not be charged with any wrongdoing in connection to injuries sustained by a suspect during an arrest.

On July 8, 2019, officers responded to the report of a 37-year-old male suspect who was inside a home without permission and in violation of a court order.

The man fled the home as police arrived and refused to stop when ordered to do so.

Police caught up to the suspect and took him to the ground. At this point, the suspect pulled out a knife and slit his own neck.

The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) was notified and an investigation began.

During the investigation, the suspect admitted to the IIU that he had cut his own neck.
