26 charged with impaired driving during week one of RCMP checkstops

The first week of the annual holiday Checkstop Program by the RCMP has netted 26 drivers with Criminal Code Impaired Driving charges.

RCMP say that 3700 vehicles were stopped during 99 Checkstops across Manitoba.

“The RCMP remains committed to removing impaired drivers off our roads through the annual Checkstop program,” said Inspector Chris Moore, Officer in Charge of Traffic Services for the Manitoba RCMP. “We know it works; over the last six Checkstop campaigns in Manitoba RCMP jurisdiction, 637 people have been charged with Impaired Driving and 300 alcohol-related suspensions have been issued.”

Police handed out 15 alcohol or drug-related tiered administrative roadside suspensions and 141 Highway Traffic Act charges were laid. 34 people received written warnings.

The RCMP Checkstop program will run until January 1, 2020.

Beginning Monday, December 16, 2019, police will be able to enforce immediate roadside sanctions on impaired drivers or those who show a ‘warn’ on screening devices.
